Germany Will Add Third Gender Option on Official Documents for Intersex People

Germany has passed a law to allow for a third option on official documents, reports The Local Germany and Deutsche Welle.

The third option will be for those born without binary male or female sexual anatomy and allow for intersex people to change their gender and first name on birth certificates later in their life if they wish to do so.

The law comes after 2017 legal battle from an intersex German who sought a third gender option. The case was initially overruled in the lower courts, but was picked up by Germany’s cabinet (led by Angela Merkal) and approved.

Some LGBT+ advocates have said this new is not enough. They want new laws to make it easier to change official documents for people who do not identify with the gender they were born with, not just intersex people.
