Ireland’s Gay Prime Minister Is Re-Registering As A Doctor To Help With The Pandemic
Ireland’s gay Prime Minister Leo Varadkar was a doctor, specifically a general practitioner before he entered politics and is now re-registering to help coronavirus patients. He will work one shift a week with the Irish Health Service Executive, according to ‘LGBTQ Nation’.
With more than 5,000 confirmed cases and 200 deaths, the Irish government had asked from retired medical personnel to consider returning to the field and assist with the pandemic.
At the same time, Prime Minister Varadkar also announced he would return to medicine. Reportedly, he will communicate with exposed patients via phone or video link.
Varadkar is the first out gay Prime Minister, the first of both Irish and Indian heritage, and the youngest ever to hold the office.
The country decriminalized homosexuality in 1993.
