Joe Biden Plans To Reverse Trump Administration’s Trans Military Ban

Joe Biden has made strong promises to support the LGBT+ community, which could include a reversal of the trans military ban.

The president-elect has reiterated his campaign message of allowing trans individuals to enlist for service. He has also promised to integrate the LGBT+ community further into the fabric of American government.

By countering Trump’s imposed ban, Biden aims to support trans and non-binary people in the workforce to ensure a clampdown on discrimination.

This policy of discrimination and prejudice extends to Trump’s trans military ban, which Biden is seeking to reverse. Alongside this, Biden has promised to tackle the policy allowing federally funded shelters ability to turn away trans people.

As ‘Gay Times’ write, Biden is also working to undo stigma imposed on the LGBT+ community and to open up accessibility to resources. This promise would reverse the Department of Defences policies which discriminate against those living with HIV and Trump-Pence’s Deploy or Get Out policy which, again, targets HIV positive individuals.

Shannon Minter, the legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, hopes the reversal of the 2019 ban will come swiftly: “I hope and expect it will be one of the first things he does.”

In a policy document, the Biden campaign said Trump and Vice President Mike Pence “have given hate against LGBTQ+ individuals safe harbour and rolled back critical protections.”

The presidential-elect is also working to undo stigma imposed on the LGBT+ community and to open up accessibility to resources and has also pledged to enact a landmark Equality Act bill during his first 100 days of presidency.

The Act in question is commonly referred to as the Equality Act which aims to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and for other purposes.

For many, this will come as no surprise as Biden’s campaign was built on the appeal of being anti-Trump, with the campaign going as far to call the Republican administration as “discriminatory and detrimental to our national security”.
