Joshua Ledwell on Trans Allyship: “Allies Have the Power to Create Space and Give Support to Trans People”

Joshua Ledwell, Principal Experience Designer at Autodesk, shares tips on how to support and show up for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming people.

1. Be a positive change agent

Allies have the power to create space and give support to trans people. By modeling inclusive behavior, you can help to spread positive change. Challenge transphobia whenever you encounter it. Speak out against statements and jokes that attack trans people.

Volunteer in your community and/or with any Pride employee resource groups within your organization, like Autodesk Pride Network.

2. Create more opportunities for belonging

It’s important to respect the names and pronouns that people use. If you are unsure, just ask “What are your pronouns?” or "What pronouns can I use for you?" By adding your own pronouns to Workday and Zoom, it makes it less awkward for other people to share their pronouns. Learn more here.

Celebrate the unique perspective and experiences of other people. By creating space and respecting different genders, cultural experiences, and abilities, we can create an environment where everyone feels comfortable being their whole self at work.

3. Practice empathy

We are living through a time of great change, and it’s not easy. You never know what other people are dealing with. Check-in with other people at the beginning of each meeting. It’s a great way to show you authentically care, and it makes space for people who are struggling. Stay informed about news and legislation that impacts the LGBTQ+ community.

4. Commit to a growth mindset

If you are faced with something new or something that surprises you, take a pause before judging or dismissing it. (For a Trans 101 learn more here.) Confront your own prejudices and challenge your own conceptions about gender stereotypes. Learn about the lived experiences of trans and nonbinary people through films and memoirs.
