Kosovo Pride Goes Ahead Despite Protests

Kosovo hosted its second ever pride parade despite cans for it to be banned, Reuters reports.

The march took place last Wednesday in the capital city, Pristina. It was officially called “In the name of freedom.”

Right wing political party The Word (Fjala) pushed to ban the march, as a result there was a heavy security presence in case any protestors showed up. Despite the controversy the march caused in the small socially-conservative, predominantly-Muslim state, the march occurred without incident.

Kosovar Minister of European Integration Dhurata Hoxha, Pristina Mayor Shpend Ahmeti, and the head of the European Union office in Kosovo, Natalia Apostolova all joined in the march.

Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj posted a supportive message on social media: “Sexual orientation is up to the individual and should be respected.

“Our constitution guarantees individual freedoms for everyone.

“LGBT and Pride Week will always have institutional support, to be free and secure to express their orientation.”
