Lesbian couple sue government after being told they cannot foster a refugee child

A married lesbian couple in Texas have been told they cannot foster a refugee child because they don’t “mirror the Holy Family”. Fatma Marouf and Bryn Esplin are suing the federally funded non-profit for discrimination.

After unsuccessful attempts at IVF and domestic child adoption, the couple sought out the Catholic Charities of Fort Worth to foster a desperately in-need refugee child, but were denied because of their same-sex marriage.

They are now being represented by Jamie Gliksberg from Lambda Legal, who said in a statement: “Our clients should be able to walk into any agency and be treated equally. Using religion as an excuse, federal taxpayer dollars are being used to discriminate.”

Gliksberg also pointed out this discrimination isn’t limited to just the LGBT+ community, the Catholic organisation can refuse Jews, Muslims, or any other non-Christian family from fostering.
