Lesbian Prom Musical Receives 7 Tony Noms – is Set to Be Made into Movie by Ryan Murphy

The Prom, a musical about a teenage girl who is forbidden from taking another girl to her school prom, has been nominated for seven Tony Awards making it the most nominated show of the night.

The musical stars Caitlin Kinnunen and Beth Leavel(who have both been nominated for Best Performance) and has received a slew of positive reviews.

Hollywood super-producer Ryan Murphy (who created Post, American Horror Story, and more) is set to make a film adaptation of the show for Netflix – set to be released in September 2020.

“The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway,” Murphy said after hearing about the nominations.

“It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too. I’m thrilled to announce I’m turning it into a MOVIE EVENT for Netflix.

“It has a musical score that will leave you singing for days, a hilarious and moving book and some of the most showstopping direction, choreography and performances I’ve ever seen on Broadway.”
