Those signing up for the upcoming London Marathon will be able to register as nonbinary for the first time.
The move does not affect the elite races, which will continue to operate under male and female categories and have their prizes divided up as such, as Gay Times report. This is down to World Athletics, an international governing body.
However, director Hugh Brasher described it as a “significant step” towards equality. “Changes such as this demonstrate our commitment to making the London Marathon for everyone.”
Earlier this week, the Boston Marathon announced plans to offer athletes the chance to take part without having to register in either the men’s or the women’s divisions from 2023. “Discussions are ongoing with nonbinary athletes in an effort to further promote inclusion at all BAA events,” said a statement from the Boston Athletic Association (BAA).
