Magomed Tushayev, Warlord Responsible for Anti-Gay purges in Chechnya, Reported Killed in Ukraine
Magomed Tushayev, a warlord and close ally of Chechen autocrat Ramzan Kadyrov, is said to have been killed in the destruction of a Russian tank convoy in Ukraine earlier this week.
Special advisor to Kadyrov, Tushayev is implicated in the string of abuses against the LGBTQ+ community in Chechnya, which the HRW reported was akin to "purges" – including that of well-known and beloved singer Zelimkhan Bakaev, who was last seen in 2017. Tushayev was leading the 141st Motorised Regiment of the Chechen National Guard earlier this week into Ukraine, as Russian forces continue to bear down on the capital of Kyiv, when it was destroyed by Ukrainian forces, according to reports.
Chechen soldiers have been deployed to Ukraine as the conflict continues to rage on in the face of renewed Russian aggression against the state. Now, over a week since the conflict began, it has been suggested by intelligence organizations that Russia has underestimated the strength of the Ukrainian resistance and fallen behind the timelines of their desired speed of conquest.
Kadyrov was seen online gloating that the Chechen units had taken no losses and that Ukrainian cities would quickly fall to Russian forces.
“As of today, as of this minute, we do not have one single casualty, or wounded, not a single man has even had a runny nose,” he said.
