Malaysian newspaper warns readers how to spot gay people

A Malaysian newspaper has published a guide on how to spot potential gay and lesbian people. The guide includes tips that gay men enjoy the gym, not for working out, but to check out other guys. It says they like beards, branded clothing, and that their eyes light up when they see a handsome man. While lesbians tend to hug each other, hold hands, and talk down to men.

LGBT+ activists are outraged at the published list and have said this actively puts lives at risk. “There are much more important issues in this country which need to be addressed,” Arwind Humar, an activist and Malaysian social media celebrity, has said, “If you really want to educate society then explain to them the traits of a paedophile, a molester, a murderer, a kidnapper, people who actually endanger the lives of others. How the hell does a gay person endanger your life?”

This comes after a string of violent homophobic activity in the country; an 18-year-old boy was burnt alive last year because his classmates said he was gay. While a transgender woman was stabbed and shot a few months later in a targeted attack on her shop.

Homosexuality is still illegal in the country and carries with it a 20-year prison sentence.
