More Gay Couples Are Seeking IVF Treatment in the UK
New statistics released from the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) have found that more and more same-sex couples in the UK are seeking IVF treatment to have children.
Between 2016 and 2017 there was a 12 percent increase in female same-sex couples seeking the treatment, while treatment for surrogates rose 22 percent.
While the majority of IVF treatments continue to be for straight couples, Sally Cheshire, the Chair of the HFEA, has said there has been a huge shift in recent years.
“We are seeing a gradual change in the reasons why people use fertility treatments, which were originally developed to help heterosexual couples with infertility problems,” she said.
“While the increases in same-sex couples, single women and surrogates having fertility treatment are small, this reflects society’s changing attitudes towards family creation, lifestyles and relationships and highlights the need for the sector to continue to evolve and adapt.”
