Petition to shut down LGBT+ prom at catholic school reaches 18,000 signatures

An LGBT+ prom organised by queer students at a Catholic college in Milwaukee has faced backlash online from the wider Catholic community. The prom, organised by the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre at Marquette University, has been attacked by the Tradition Family and Property (TFP) Student Action group who have circulated an online petition to get the dance cancelled.

The petition says: “The teaching of the Catholic Church is clear: Homosexuality vice is ’intrinsically disordered’ and contrary to natural law.’ Therefore, no Catholic campus should sponsor a dance that legitimizes unnatural behaviour which deeply offends God.”

The TFP Student Action Direction, John Ritchie, said that promoting the prom “is like promoting drugs for those who suffer from a drug addiction.”

Queer students at Marquette haven’t let attacks like these deter them from organising the prom. Maria Bunczak, a sophomore who helped organise the event, has said if anything this petition has given them more reason to host it: “People say that we have made so many strides with gay marriage being legal. That’s true, but we still have so much further to go. This petition really exemplifies that. Seeing that someone is against our mission helps fuel us even more.”
