Sophia Bush comes out as queer, confirms relationship with Ashlyn Harris

Actress Sophia Bush revealed her queer identity in a heartfelt essay for Glamour and disclosed her relationship with retired U.S.A. Women’s National Team soccer player Ashlyn Harris.

“I sort of hate the notion of having to come out in 2024,” Bush expressed in a feature for the fashion magazine released on Thursday. “But I’m deeply aware that we are having this conversation in a year when we’re seeing the most aggressive attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in modern history.”

Reflecting on over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in state legislatures the prior year, Bush stated that this compelled her to “give the act of coming out the respect and honor it deserves,” according to ‘NBC News’.

“I’ve experienced so much safety, respect, and love in the queer community, as an ally all of my life, that, as I came into myself, I already felt it was my home,” she shared. “I think I’ve always known that my sexuality exists on a spectrum. Right now I think the word that best defines it is queer. I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great.”

Following her divorce filing from entrepreneur Grant Hughes in August, People magazine initially reported in October about Bush and Harris's relationship, yet neither confirmed nor addressed the speculation. The duo was later spotted together at an Oscars viewing party in March.

In her essay, Bush addressed circulating rumours regarding her relationship timeline with Harris in relation to Harris's divorce from fellow soccer star Ali Krieger.

“Everyone that matters to me knows what’s true and what isn’t,” Bush stated. “But even still there’s a part of me that’s a ferocious defender, who wants to correct the record piece by piece. But my better self, with her earned patience, has to sit back and ask, What’s the f------- point? For who? For internet trolls? No, thank you. I’ll spend my precious time doing things I love instead.”

Recalling her mother’s reaction to a friend’s judgmental remark about her daughter’s sexuality, Bush shared her mom’s supportive response emphasising her daughter’s happiness.

Bush likened her journey to shedding a heavy vest, conveying a newfound sense of freedom.

“I finally feel like I can breathe,” she expressed. “I turned 41 last summer, amid all of this, and I heard the words I was saying to my best friend as they came out of my mouth. ‘I feel like this is my first birthday,’ I told her. This year was my very first birthday.”
