Starbucks announces comprehensive healthcare for trans employees

The coffee giant Starbucks has announced it will be rolling out comprehensive healthcare for all of its transgender employees. While the company has been covering gender affirmation surgery since 2012, they will also now cover breast reduction, augmentation, facial feminization, hair transplants, and other transition related care – many of which were previously considered as just elective.

Starbucks sought advice from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health for making its new policies, ensuring they were as inclusive as possible.

Ron Crawford, the vice president of benefits at Starbucks, said in a statement: “The approach was driven not just by the company’s desire to provide truly inclusive coverage, and by powerful conversations with transgender partners about how those benefits would allow them to truly be who they are."

Trans advocates are encouraged by this announcement from such a major American company, many have been arguing these so-called elective surgeries are in fact life-saving and necessary for trans people.

Starbucks has earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s annual Corporate Equality Index for 2018, earning the title: “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality.”
