The Ultimate Guide to Succeeding on Your First Day at a New Job

By Joshua Johnson, Project Manager at PPD

  1. Sleep well the night before! I like to make sure I start a new job with a good night of rest – everyone knows there will be a lot of (maybe boring) paperwork on day 1 of a new job.
  2. Dress to impress! It’s important to me to make a good first impression on that first day – dressing up a bit helps portray a professional and confident image of myself.
  3. Take note of names! You’ll likely get introduced (virtually or in person) to a number of new people on the first day, so I keep a short list of people I meet with their job/role for reference.
  4. Plan/bring an easy tasty lunch! I never know if the first day will have me eating lunch while reading training materials or eating out with my new team members; having a lunch from home option makes it easy to go with the flow whatever the situation.
  5. Get excited! Along with the formal paperwork and heaps of information coming at you, don’t forget to get excited about all the reasons you chose to start the new job.
