Travelling to Countries Where Homosexuality Is Illegal

"I try to remember the best thing you can do is to be yourself, friendly and accepting. In turn, hopefully, they see that we are people just like them." In a world where diversity is celebrated by many (but not all), LGBTQ+ holidaymakers embark on journeys that go beyond exploration and relaxation. Their holidays become transformative experiences as they navigate new destinations while embracing their authentic selves. Matthew Wilcox shares his story travelling to places where homosexuality is illegal and tips for visiting the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

In September 2022, my husband and I went to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. As you can imagine, it was one of those "once in a lifetime" type holidays. In both countries, homosexual activity is illegal. This posed some questions, we knew we wanted to go to these countries, but we wanted to feel safe and as comfortable as we could be knowing it's illegal to be us! We booked through an agency that made sure our itinerary had guides and hotels that were LGBTQ+ friendly.

We had the time of our life in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The people in Sri Lanka are so friendly, they welcomed us into their culture and for the most part, we felt like two "normal" (whatever that is) people. There was one time when my husband felt uncomfortable following a couple of people in a hotel pointing us out. Of course, this is not acceptable; however, I tried to appreciate that many Sri Lankans won't have come into contact with any/many openly gay men. They might not understand. I try to remember the best thing you can do is to be yourself, friendly and accepting. In turn, hopefully, they see that we are people just like them. Since returning from Sri Lanka, it has been reported that they are decriminalising homosexuality following a review of their human rights records.

If you are thinking of going to Sri Lanka or/and the Maldives:

  • Do your research and speak to a travel agent for advice.
  • People in Sri Lanka and the Maldives are very friendly.
  • I would recommend having lunch in a village with a local family where you learn how they cook and live (Sri Lankan food is amazing); visit Minneriya National Safari Park, watch the sunrise from Pidurangala Rock, explore Kandy City and take the train to Ella.
