Ugandan Minister Tries to Ban Arts Festival Out of Fear it Promotes Homosexuality

Simon Lokodo, the Minister for Ethics and Integrity in Uganda, attempted to ban the world-famous Nyege Nyege Festival because he thought it promoted homosexuality.

Nyege Nyege is an international arts and music festival whose name translates to “sex sex”. It attracts artists from all over the world, with a line up featuring Sho Madjozi, Stella Chiweshe, and Orchestre Les Mangalepa.

Lokodocalled on police to stop the festival, claiming it promotes “‘open sex, noise, homosexuality.”

“The purpose of this festival in the last two years has been compromised to accommodate the celebration and recruitment of young people into homosexuality and LGBTI movement,” he said.

After meeting with the Internal Affairs Minister, Jeje Odongo, Lokodo soon withdrew his objections.

“After consultation, intra government and security agencies as well as discussions with the event organisers this morning, we have now found a middle ground that takes into account the concerns of the government as well as those of the organizers,” he said.

Organisers of the event have agreed to forbid children after 6pm, as well as prohibit drugs and homosexuality.
