UKIP politician blames murder, drugs, and social unrest on same-sex marriage

by Tim Gibson

Tom Aldridge, UKIP councillor for Lyngford ward in Somerset, made a series of bizarre and homophobic comments in a public meeting last week. The 87-year-old said “It’s probably not a very popular observation, but it’s simply this: that long-term, if we could get back to marriages being the sort of standard, and I’m talking about heterosexual marriage as the standard, throughout the country as it was say 50 years ago, most of these social behaviour and drug problems and all the rest of them would disappear.”

When asked about his comments by the Somerset County Gazette he reiterated “it’s simple really, going back to after WWII, marriage was the norm – our behaviour now is not, society was better, more cohesive. Family, meaning a mother, father and children, was the basis of society, marriage holds it together.” He even managed to connect same-sex couples to murdered children, saying, “In most cases of children being mistreated, or in some cases, murdered, it is the ‘irregular’ relationships, the ‘reconstructed’ families,” he said, not citing any evidence.

Regardless, UKIP continues to be in deep financial trouble, as the party is rumoured to be circling bankruptcy. The Mail Online reported that they were already £380K in debt before the last general election.
