What to watch: ‘Pose’ assembles largest ever trans cast, and gets rave reviews

TV super showrunner, Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, The People Vs OJ Simpson, Feud, etc), has debuted his latest series: Pose, a glittery drama about New York City’s Ball Culture of the 1980s (think Paris is Burning), that also features the largest trans cast ever assembled for the small screen.

Fox describes the series as a “juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the ball culture world, the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe and the downtown social and literary scene.” Starring Evan Peters and Kate Mara as a New Jersey couple who fall for the glamour of 1980s New York.

Early reviews suggest the show could be a critical hit. Eric Deggans of NPR says, “Pose brims with fresh faces delivering impressive performances, and it succeeds in humanizing characters and a subculture that has too often been overlooked, oppressed or vilified elsewhere on television.” While Spencer Kornhaber of The Atlantic agrees that “the most exciting aspect of the show is the fresh faces that populate it.”

Pose debuts on FX in the US on 3 June. A premiere date for the UK has not yet been announced.
