Canada To Ban LGBT+ Conversion Therapy
The Canadian government has introduced new legislation aiming to criminalise LGBT+ conversion therapy. Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government had made this promise in his presidential campaign in 2019.
These modifications to Canada’s Criminal Code include “offences such as causing a person to undergo conversion therapy, advertising and profiting from conversion therapy and removing a minor from Canada,” as reported by ‘NBC News’.
Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, David Lametti, said that “Conversion therapy has been discredited and denounced by professionals and health associations in Canada, the United States and around the world. It has no basis on science or facts.”
The bill would not criminalise personal opinions, when expressed in personal conversations, of people who want to support those who struggle with their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Conversion therapy has already been banned in some Canadian cities like Vancouver, Calgary and Ontario. Several U.S. states have also banned the practice.
