Nickelodeon Announces SpongeBob Is A Member Of The LGBT+ Community
Nickelodeon has officially announced SpongeBob is a member of the LGBT+ community. While “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBT+ community and other allies this month and every month” as the channel wrote on it’s Twitter account, three pictures of Nickelodeon characters were uploaded: SpongeBob, Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger, and Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra.
After the reveal, the fact became a top trending moment on Twitter.
Lots had speculated in the past that SpongeBobo was gay although it has never been made official, and Nickelodeon has not yet specified his exact identity. After the Twitter upload, the channel turned off replies to its tweet.
Back in 2005 the show’s creator Stephen Hillenburg said that SpongeBob and his friend Patrick Starfish are not gay, rather saying he thinks them as asexual.
“It doesn't have anything to do with what we're trying to do," Hillenburg said at the time. "We never intended them to be gay. I consider them to be almost asexual. We're just trying to be funny, and this has got nothing to do with the show.”
As ‘Elle’ reports, there has been speculation that, although Twitter has been filled with “SpongeBob is Gay’ tweets, Nickelodeon is celebrating SpongeBob for his asexuality, the “A” in “LGBTQIA”.
