Director, Health & Benefits - Absence, Disability & HM

As a director in our Health & Benefit practice you will play a key leadership role in our Canadian Absence, Disability and Health Management (ADHM) team. You will be responsible and have oversight for the consulting we deliver on a wide variety of complex projects related to leaves, STD, LTD and health management programs. This involves coaching and mentoring ADHM practitioners and contributing to ensure that our lead consultants are providing best-in-class advice in this area. In addition, you will serve as the lead ADHM consultant and/or strategic advisor on some of our most complex client engagements. You will be also responsible for actively cultivate new business and sales opportunities.

As a subject matter expert, you will regularly interact with other experts and consultants to develop new intellectual capital, create client deliverables, develop strategies to address clients’ business objectives and contribute to our overall Heath & Benefit business strategy. 

The Role

 

  • Lead large and complex ADHM related client engagements:
    • Serve as a senior ADHM strategist on projects within Health & Benefits, ensuring that the health and wellbeing strategy aligns with the broader benefits and total rewards strategy
    • Coordinate with teams and plan for execution of ADHM-specific client engagements, ensuring the progress of the team against established objectives, budget, timeline, deliverables and quality standards
    • Develop statements of work, project plans and budgets involving multiple workflow streams and client teams
    • Coordinate and effectively communicate with other consultants serving as the primary and/or daily contacts to clients and program carriers and vendors on delivery of services
    • Manage client expectations and raise appropriate issues to other senior consultants and client relationship managers
    • Interface with colleagues from other practices and regions on assignments that reflect the client’s broader business issues
    • Projects include items such as design of leaves and disability programs, carrier and vendor management and audits, procurements, negotiation, optimization and implementation; operational assessments; benchmarking; health and wellness strategy and assessments; measure and evaluate ROI; create and design customized solutions and programs, etc…
  • Manage ADHM client and prospect relationships:
    • Establish a trusted advisor relationship with client/prospect contacts and provide consistent, superior relationship management
    • Identify opportunities to cross-sell new products and services
    • Identify opportunities to leverage ADHM practitioners across our client base and support client teams on a broad range of needs in the ADHM space
  • Assist leadership executing the ADHM strategy and work in Canada
    • Mentor and develop ADHM practitioners, as well as oversee the quality of work delivered
    • Contribute to the community of ADHM practitioners to ensure the efficient delivery of projects and client work
    • Stay abreast of carrier and vendor capabilities in the ADHM marketplace
    • Contribute to the development of new IC and consulting tools and approaches aligned with broader Health & Benefits strategy
    • Work with the Canadian Health & Benefits team and other ADHM leads in Canada and the US to execute on the business strategy
  • Significantly contribute to new business opportunities for health management work with new and current clients through such strategies as:
    • Coordinating with existing sales and client relationship management teams to identify, develop and close strategic sales opportunities
    • Building relationship with internal and external sources to maximize the penetration of key target accounts
    • Leveraging existing market knowledge and contacts to expand relationships and create new business opportunities for Willis Towers Watson
    • Participating in prospecting opportunities with new clients as part of a broader team
  • Build relationships internally and collaborate effectively on cross-functional teams
     

Requirements

  • 20+ years progressive experience and success in delivering ADHM or related health and group benefits consulting services to large and mid-sized clients, preferably gained in a consulting environment, health and group benefits carrier, or other allied health profession
  • Recognized Canadian ADHM leader with an executive presence (i.e. polished and well developed oral and written communication skills)
  • Strong knowledge of the dynamics of leaves, group health and disability plan design and efficient delivery of these programs in Canada, including carrier and vendor capabilities
  • Proven experience successfully managing multiple projects and producing quality deliverables on time and within budget
  • Experience in managing professionals and providing coaching and mentoring to colleagues
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Self-starter attitude and ability to work with ambiguity
  • Flexibility and proven ability to diagnose and resolve issues
  • Strong collaboration skills and openness to continuous improvement
  • Strong analytical and creative skills
  • Business acumen to identify opportunities for additional ADHM or other human capital consulting work in support of our clients’ strategies
  • The ability to see the "big picture" leveraging the resources of related practices to address the clients' business challenges
  • Interest in being involved in business development opportunities
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and desire to keep abreast of latest developments in health and disability management and strategy, and contributing to the development of intellectual capital, new tools and approaches
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • BA/BS degree
  • Knowledge of both English and French is an asset but is not required
  • Flexibility with respect to travel that could range from 30 to 40% depending on location and circumstances
