Trainee Client Manager- Captives

Summary of Role

Associate within the Guernsey Client Management team. Working alongside colleagues on a portfolio of captive insurance clients and prospects from around the globe, but predominantly UK and Channel Islands.

The role will include supporting client needs, the retention of clients and new business development, in the specialist area of captive insurance.

The Role

Once fully trained the role of the captive manager includes:

Technical Insurance

  • Administer, collate, negotiate and review Policy documentation. 
  • Claims administration including reporting and recording
  • Liaison with insurance and reinsurance brokers as required
  • Assist with underwriting decisions in conjunction with Account Director including Renewals and New Business 
  • Monitoring of Risk Gap
  • Obtaining Guernsey Financial Service Commission (GFSC) approval of changes to business plan
  • Obtaining board approval for underwriting decisions
  • Accounting for premium
  • Establish and review methodology in conjunction with designated signatory
  • Draft and monitor the Own Solvency Capital Assessment (OSCA)
  • Draft and monitor the Regulatory Solvency Assessment (RSA)


  • Ensure the production of management accounts, statutory accounts and information, budgets, cashflow statements and supplementary information as required and liaising with auditors where necessary.
  • Assist with the adoption of appropriate accounting practices and ensure adherence thereto.
  • Monitor the margin of solvency
  • Manage cash requirements of the companies
  •  Liaise with and monitor investment managers in respect of invested funds

Company Administration

  • Maintain contact with all directors and advise them of developments
  • Keep local directors apprised of client developments
  • Co-ordinate board meetings
  • Ensure timely production of board packs (7 days prior to meeting)
  • Ensure timely production of minutes and the Account Director (AD) reviews prior to distribution
  • Action matters arising
  • Oversee client travel arrangements
  • To attend lunches or dinners with clients as required 
  • Ensure relevant company secretarial functions are performed in a timely manner, including:
  • Annual Validation with Guernsey Registry
  • GFSC return
  • Tax return
  • AGM if required
  • Maintain the compliance log
  • Update Corporate Governance documentation


  • Maintain ongoing relationship with client (keeping in contact with them on a monthly basis where possible)
  • Visit client annually (authorisation from the MD required)
  • Establish good relationship with key figures
  • Forward relevant Willis Towers Watson circulars
  • Check publications for relevant client issues
  • Check client website from time to time
  • To maintain an appropriate level of understanding and knowledge of client businesses, business model, plans and strategy 
  • Keep the AD advised of any significant updates
  • Ensure you are fully updated and understand all Anti Money Laundering (AML) procedures. Give consideration to potential anti-money laundering, reporting any suspicious activities to the AML Officer.
  • To carry out any reasonable request asked by the Managing Director or Team Leader
  • Compliance with local Corporate Governance and regulatory requirements, the Willis Towers Watson Clients’ Bill of Rights and the Willis Towers Watson Excellence Model
  • Provide support and training to the team where required

  • Quick learner that demonstrates ability to build practical knowledge of account development and appropriate tools to achieve this aim
  • Ability to build effective relationships, at all levels, with clients, prospects, associates, insurers and external specialists
  • Ability to represent the practice and Willis Towers Watson with integrity and credibility
  • Strong communication, negotiation and influencing skills
  • Knowledge of Willis Towers Watson products and services
  • Ability to work in a team environment but independently when required
  • Numerate and display a hunger for learning, with enthusiasm and drive to progress and build a career in the industry 
  • Studying/will study towards ACII, a degree level professional qualification (we will provide the relevant support for this)
