5 Tips for LGBTQ+ Professionals to Look After Their Mental Health at Work

Feeling safe, at ease and welcomed in the workplace is a vital aspect of everyday working life. By creating a space where employees feel free to express any anxieties or personal concerns, and be open about their mental health, you can foster an authentically inclusive environment that benefits everyone.

Ron Hazen, Senior Manager in Pharmacy Insights at Walgreens, shares his top tips for LGBTQ+ professionals to ensure they look after their mental health in the workplace. From active socialising to learning to trust your instincts, these easy tips could help you to feel more safe in your work environment.

1. Make use of available resources.

Seek out and engage with mental health and mindfulness resources provided by your employer or on your own. Make a habit of utilizing tools that help you manage work demands, stress, anxiety, and work/life balance.

2. Humans are naturally social, and this significantly impacts our mentality.

Remember that you are not alone, especially now that we are increasingly remote. When possible, make an effort to attend in-person meetings and gatherings so you can get to know your co-workers in more informal settings.

3. Don’t try to deal with difficult emotions by yourself.

Seek out acquaintances, friends, allies and mentors at work that you feel comfortable sharing aspects of your work or personal life with.

4. Learn to trust yourself and your instincts.

Establish clear boundaries and trust your gut. You know what’s best for you, and sometimes you need to advocate for yourself and safeguard your mental health.

5. Don’t overwork yourself or do more than you know you can handle.

Prioritize rests, take breaks, and champion self-care!
