Bisexual Boxer Nicola Adams in Strictly Same-Sex History
After years of pressure to include a same-sex couple, producers of popular UK dancing contest Strictly Come Dancing have confirmed that Olympic boxer, Nicola Adams, will be one half of the show's first same-sex dancing couple.
Set to air in October, Adams will be paired with a professional female dancer and will compete to win. After starring 240 mixed-sex couples, Adams, who retired from boxing in 2019, will be making groundbreaking steps in LGBT+ representation on TV.
The Pressure has been mounting on the BBC to include a same-sex couple after rival broadcaster ITV introduced its first LGBT pairing in its rival show, Dancing on Ice, which sparked rumours that the BBC weren't far behind - some even going as far as to claim that the show would seek to introduce two male and female same-sex couples to boost representation.
Speaking to BBC News, Adams revealed that she had actually asked the BBC about dancing with a woman - "I asked the show about it. They wanted to know if I wanted to be on the show and I said, ‘Yeah, I’ll do it, but I want to dance with another female dance partner.'” This came after the Sun reported that an insider on the show had told the paper that “Everyone assumed producers would simply pair gay pro, Johannes Radebe, with a male celebrity but they felt that was too obvious."
