Drag Race star Madame LaQueer comes out as trans

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Madame LaQueer has come out as trans.

Madame, who appeared on season four of the US reality show back in 2012, shared an Instagram Story earlier this week, then gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly to tell her story.

She revealed that she will now go by the name of Cassie (Cassandra) out of drag, and will perform in drag under the name of Madame Cassandra Uzumaki LaQueer.

Speaking to EW, Madame said: “It’s something I’ve been pondering for myself for years. It’s now or never. I think this serves for me to be a voice for those that have persuaded themselves into not pursuing their truths and let time take over.

“It’s never too late to come out and live your true experience and be yourself and be authentic. There’s nothing like feeling loved in your own skin.”

The drag performer said she realised she was trans in 2006, and talked about how her “inner saboteur” prevented her from living authentically for a long time.

She credited a conversation she had with fellow Drag Race star Jade Jolie, who herself came out as trans in October last year, that gave her courage to speak her truth, as ‘Yahoo! News’, writes.

“The climax of the story is just coincidentally having to carpool with Jade Jolie to a gig we had together, and we had hours to talk,” she recalled. “It came out in the conversation, and she knew everything I was going to say. She clocked it quickly, and it just made sense. Like, girl, it’s now or never.”

Drag Race recently won Outstanding Reality Competition at the latest Primetime Emmys (January 15), with RuPaul Charles using the acceptance speech to call out anti-drag rhetoric.

The host said: “If a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her because knowledge is power, and if someone tries to restrict your access to power, they are trying to scare you. So listen to a drag queen! We love you! Thank you!”
