Gay Couple In Poland Hands Out Rainbow Masks On Streets
A gay couple in Poland, Jakub Kwiecinski and Dawid Mycek, recently produced and distributed hundreds of rainbow masks to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the couple is sending a powerful message in a country which, both historically and recently, has shown hostility towards the LGBT+ community and queer equality.
As the ‘Advocate’ reports, the couple recorded and uploaded their philanthropy in a YouTube video where the love and appreciation they received are documented.
In the video, the couple who made approximately 300 masks, is shown giving a mask to an older man, saying “It's rainbow and I know you are our ally” to which the man responded “I am not against”.
Kwiecinski and Mycek close their video with a statement that sums up one of the goals of their endeavor: “We are tired, but happy, because it's cool, as it turns out, the rainbow does not offend, does not infect, but can protect people from a real threat.”
In the past years, one-third of Poland’s municipalities have passed resolutions outlawing “LGBT propaganda”, declaring themselves as “pro family”. These areas have been called “LGBT free” zones by activists. Same-sex relations are not recognised there and two new bills currently under consideration categorise homosexuality as pedophilia.
