New Study Shows That Puberty Blockers Could Save The Lives Of Trans Teens
As many states in the U.S. are fighting to ban access to puberty blockers for minors, a new study sheds some light on the importance of accessibility for young trans people.
It is known that compared to cisgender teens, trans teens are “more likely to be victims of violence and attempt suicide” in high school. But this new study shows that trans adults who had access to puberty blockers as teens were less likely to have suicidal thoughts.
“Of more than 20,000 transgender adults between 18 and 36, those who were able to suppress puberty had lower odds of lifetime suicidal ideation than those who were not able to,” reports ‘The Hill’.
The study also showed that of the 16% of trans adults who wanted puberty blockers only 2.5% could access them.
In 2018, the rates of attempted suicide among trans teens were up to 50%. For multiracial trans people the rate is 33 times higher than that of the general population.
