Pioneering inclusivity and empowerment at JPMorgan Chase on International Women's Day

By Karla Arnaiz, HRBA Country/Market Head at JPMorgan Chase & Co

Growing up in Mexico City within a traditional family setting, I am the second of three sisters. Education was the cornerstone of our upbringing, courtesy of our parents. My father, a civil engineer, instilled in us the importance of knowledge and fostered my passion for reading. Conversely, my mother, despite her limited formal education ending after middle school, was a remarkable homemaker with a keen sense for business. Her culinary skills were exceptional, igniting my appreciation for quality cuisine. Unfortunately, her educational journey was cut short due to my grandfather's belief that a woman's place was at home.

My mother took immense pride in her daughters' achievements: my sister Diana became a pharmacology chemist, I pursued industrial engineering, and my other sister Lili ventured into international commerce. Honoring my mother includes maintaining the tradition of cooking, particularly preparing her mole recipe annually for Christmas and New Year celebrations, a ritual that brings me immense joy.

The concept of gender roles was challenged early in my life. When I expressed my desire to become an engineer to my father, his initial response was that it was a man's field. This experience highlighted the necessity of creating equitable spaces for all women, including lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer women. Unknowingly, I was championing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) principles from a young age.

This is my driving force. I have dedicated my career to supporting women by coaching them to realize their potential, empowering my team as a manager, and designing programs as the head of Talent and Career Development to enhance diverse representation in leadership roles. My aim is to inspire women to believe in their capabilities and to cherish themselves.

My commitment to DEI extends beyond women to all underrepresent communities, including the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ community’s resilience and stories of overcoming discrimination have deeply inspired me. Ensuring everyone has a voice and creating inclusive opportunities for all to achieve their dreams is my life’s passion.
