Providing a Safe Space for the LGBTQ+ Community

Clymene Ang, Client Experience Manager at State Street, spoke to myGwork about what authentic allyship means, and the role of LGBTQ+ allies in the workplace.

What does it mean for you to be an ally?

Being an ally provides a safe space for people in the community to express themselves as they wish. There are instances when the world has been unkind, and it is all the more imperative that we provide channels through which members of the LGBTQ+ feel listened to and supported.

How, when and why did you decide to be an LGBTQ+ ally?

I come from a country which remains to have a conservative stance on the LGBTQ+ community. I’ve seen my friends brace themselves to cut ties with their families in their coming out journey, while some have accepted that they can’t live as their authentic selves if they remain within their parents’ influence. Knowing their experiences made me reflect on the need for more allies in this world. No one deserves to live in fear of expressing who they are.

What makes an organization inclusive for you?

A declaration of being an equal opportunity employer is just the first step. It is through experiencing the organizational culture that determines if a company is inclusive. I am fortunate to work for an organization where there is consistent top-down messaging that reinforces the value of inclusion and members of various marginalized groups are supported through employee networks.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an ally?

Be open to learning. There is no definitive guide on how to become an ally, but you can always start by educating yourself. Your own journey to allyship can start with something small. It is a continuous learning process for all of us.

How can allies help create an inclusive workplace?

Our circumstances have led us to have preconceived notions that impact how we interact with others. Understanding our unconscious bias is the first step in ensuring we behave more inclusively. This helps us foster an inclusive environment and recognize the value of having diverse perspectives in the workplace.
