"Trump Pride" Was Everything Everyone Expected

The Trump Campaign has been courting the LGBT+ vote during the election as the race comes closer to November, keen to win support from a demographic that historically has been shown to lean towards more progressive causes. According to organisation Queer the Vote, LGBT+ voters could have entirely changed the outcome of the last election had more people been registered and voted, and the Trump campaign seems acutely aware of the power of the LGBT+ vote.

"Trump Pride" this week was hosted by Tiffany Trump, who spoke on a "Trump Pride" podium to a room of several dozen after coming out to lukewarm applause as The Black Eyed Pea's "I'Ve Got a Feeling" played. Describing her father, Tiffany said "I know what my father believes in. Prior to politics, he supported gays, lesbians, the LGBQIIA+ [sic] community". The decision to omit the "T" was not missed, with many taking to social media to mock the event for it, reaffirming support for transgender and non-binary members of our community.

Continuing, Tiffany sought to defend her father - claiming that stories that suggest he isn't in favour of LGBT+ rights are "fabricated lies", - "We know you [her friends say], how can you support your father, we know your best friends are gay, to which I say, my father has always supported [the LGBT+ community]". This comes off of the back of policies carried out under the Trump Administration that included banning transgender people from serving in the Armed Forces, denying visas to the same-sex partners of diplomats, and nominating a homophobic Judge to the Supreme Court. The irony was lost on the crowd however, who cheered along in support.

"My dad doesn't look at someone and say oh who you love - there should be love for all, one love, openly love - we're all humans," concluded Tiffany, at the end of a 10-minute speech that has widely been viewed as a disaster for the beleaguered Trump administration. Mocked on social media and twitter, the event garned almost instant backlash as Santiago Mayer, Executive Director of Voters of Tomorrow, described Tiffany Trump as "an entitled rich white girl who wants to pretend she knows what she's talking about". This is not the first time the Trump family has tried to court with the LGBT community after the President's son Eric accidentally came out on television and later had to clarify that he was in fact, not gay.
