UK Court Rules Against Gender-neutral Passports
A UK Court has ruled that people cannot have their passports with their gender unspecified.
Campaigner Christie Elan-Cane challenged the Court of Appeal arguing passports with an "X" instead of gender should be available. At a December hearing, Kate Gallafent QC, on behalf of Elan-Cane stated: "This is an important case in the anxious context of the proper understanding and respect for the intimate, human rights of the affected class – persons whose gender identity is neither, or neither exclusively, male nor female."
"I regret to inform that the Appeal Court has ruled in the UK government's favor in a judgment handed down this morning. We intend to seek permission for the case to be heard at the Supreme Court."
But as of Tuesday, the appeal was dismissed. The court of appeal have ruled in favor of the Home Office, stating there was no positive obligation on the government to provide "X" gender in passports.
