Ian McKellen Talks About Coming Out

After coming out at the age of 49 Ian McKellen talks about his experience coming out.  “I didn’t really know who I was—a closeted gay,” he said.

Living and growing up in a time where being gay was criminalised made life hard for young McKellen but after attending Cambridge University he was able to be true to himself and to others.

“Cambridge [University] was great for me… all the many parts I had played there, as I loved for the first time going out in public and displaying my emotions.

“I enjoyed disguising myself as a closeted gay boy,” he shares, according to People.
