LGBT+ Surrogacy Agencies Fill Taiwan

In 2019 Taiwan legalised same-sex marriage and since then the country has seen a “rush” in commercial surrogacy agencies wanting to help LGBT+ couples seeking to start a family.

“Having a child in the world to care for, who will return our love unconditionally, is an amazing experience we did not expect to have,” Geoffrey Li, a man who has gone through the procedure of surrogacy with his husband in Taiwan although it is illegal,  told the 'Thomson Reuters Foundation'.

Same-sex couples in Taiwan “can only adopt children who are biologically related to at least one of them” under current laws.

The Taiwan LGBT Family Rights Advocacy (TLFRA) group were expecting the number of same-sex parents to rise, after being in contact with at least 300 “rainbow families”.

“Part of the (LGBT+) community is celebrating, while part of the community has a lot of fighting to do,” said Chu Chiajong, administrative secretary of the TLFRA.

Since the new law was passed, Taiwan has emerged as a new market for LGBT+ surrogacy agencies, mainly from the United States, where “gay couples are willing to pay up to $140,000” to use their services, which amounts to almost 10 times the average annual salary.
