Vanessa Feltz Attacks Government Over Failure to Ban Conversion Therapy
Appearing on A Gay and A NonGay, veteran TV and radio presenter Vanessa Feltz called the government "disgraceful" for not doing more to ban conversion therapy years after pledging to do so.
She said she couldn’t see any “sound reason or possible justification” for the UK government to have not already banned the “abuse and contemptible” practice.
“I cannot see any reason at all – ANY reason at all, any sound reason or possible justification for not moving all possible hindrances to stopping this… it’s abusive and contemptible that it should be allowed to continue in any form whatsoever,” Vanessa Feltz said.
“It’s disgraceful that it hasn’t been outlawed, punished, condemned vigorously on front pages and by politicians of all persuasions.”
Conversion therapy is banned in a number of countries, including New Zealand and Germany, and the UK government promised in the Queen's speech earlier this year that efforts would be made to ban the evil practice.
Papers, however, later reported that the prime minister had promised that freedom of speech and religion would be protected, despite the ban, after religious groups wrote to him to complain.
Equalities Minister Liz Truss promised the ban would come after a consultation, saying that the government has “always been committed to stamping out the practice of conversion therapy.”
“We want to make sure that people in this country are protected, and these proposals mean nobody will be subjected to coercive and abhorrent conversion therapy,” Truss said.
“Alongside this legislation, we will make new funding available to ensure that victims have better access to the support they need.”
No timeline as yet has been given, and it is now 3 years since the promise to ban conversion therapy was made.
